this is going to bother me all day
Is “spelunking” a good word? Or is it a somewhat gross word? To say, that is, because I know what it means. I just can’t stop thinking about it and I seem to be unable to reach a verdict. Opinions, anyone?
(Oh, and also, this is completely unrelated, but to you Valentine’s Day Swappers in the house: Caryn and I e-mailed group info yesterday, so if you haven’t gotten it yet, please let me know. Otherwise, you know, swap on!)

Well, I hope this doesn’t get me banned or anything, but when I see that word I think of the South Park movie. Remember this line?
“Mr. Mackey: Boys, I seriously doubt that Mr Garrison ever said: “Eat penguin shit, you ass spelunker”. ”
SPEElunker. Heh Heh.
I enjoy the word, although I have a sneaking suspicion that I shouldn’t.
I think spelunking is a silly word, but philately is downright disturbing.
When I went to visit Beloit College (in Wisconsin) in my high school search-for-a-college days, one of the highlights of the campus tour was when it was mentioned that you could always remember how to pronounce Beloit because it’s the sound a rock makes when it’s dropped in a toilet. buh-LOYT! I would venture to say that spuh-LUNK is an even better rock-toilet sound.
Elizabeth — Heh, I think it’s a matter of policy that South Park references can never get anyone banned.
Fraulein — I’m still torn. On one hand, it’s kind of fun to say, but then somewhere around the middle, it sort of feels dirty.
Bill — I sorta like “philately”. I have no good reason why, but I do.
srah — That’s kind of an interesting way to get a person to remember how to say something… I mean, how often do you go around dropping rocks in toilets?
“I mean, how often do you go around dropping rocks in toilets? ”
that depends….are we speaking euphemistically here?
if not, the answer’s “rarely”
if so, I’d go with “regularly”
;)
It was a routine Saturday night - dropping rocks in the toilet, writing down the sounds it made…
organic onomatopoeia…that’s what I call it.
“We all have our rocks to sink,” says Grouper Calvin. “What have you done philately for me lately, that’s the toss, eh?”
“Some of those ain’t rocks,” said the cabby. “If you know what I mean.”
I just laughed and tossed in a granite corner of Ronnie Van Zant’s tombstone.
/cackle
But, when speaking non-euphemistically, you said “rarely” so does that mean that occasionally you do drop actual rocks in the toilet?
You could drop them in the tank to improve your water efficiency.
