in the vein of embarrassing the hell out of myself

Published by jamelah at 6:45 pm under Everything, Lists, Dirty Pop

I have a real post planned for you tomorrow, one that will be good to read, I swear. I was going to write it today but I have a test tomorrow so it’s not going to happen. Anyway, I was looking over my top 25 most-played list on iTunes and being ashamed of myself. And because I like to revel in my own personal shame, I thought I’d put this list on the internet for you to read and laugh. So here goes:

  1. Evil - Interpol
  2. Cry Me A River - Justin Timberlake (I told you)
  3. The Warming Sun - Grandaddy
  4. Slow Hands - Interpol
  5. Molly’s Chambers - Kings of Leon
  6. Toxic - Britney Spears
  7. All I Know - Screaming Trees
  8. Let It Ride - Ryan Adams
  9. Burn - Usher (seriously!)
  10. Dirty Jeans - Magic Dirt
  11. My Happiness - Powderfinger
  12. I Am Trying to Break Your Heart - Wilco
  13. Kill You - Eminem
  14. Ghettochip Malfunction (Hell Yes) - Beck (this is from the Hell Yes EP, and I like this version better than the album version on Guero)
  15. Silent All These Years - Tori Amos
  16. Tear-Stained Eye - Son Volt
  17. Bukowski - Modest Mouse
  18. Sour Times - Portishead
  19. Total Eclipse of the Heart - Bonnie Tyler (you had to know this was going to make the list)
  20. Blue Light - Mazzy Star
  21. Us - Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks
  22. My Love - Justin Timberlake feat. T.I. (I can’t even pretend not to love Justin Timberlake anymore, can I?)
  23. Bliss - Tori Amos
  24. mumblemumblebyebyebyensyncmumblemumble
  25. The Mess We’re In - PJ Harvey & Thom Yorke

So what’s your list? Spill it.

Brief intro: Hi Jamelah, nice to meet you, I’m Julia, been lurking for a couple of weeks, love your site, blogrolled you, blah blah blah.

Down to business: Your list is infinitely cooler than mine, no matter what you may think. Two words for you: Bette Midler.

Sorry, what was that #24 one? Didn’t quite hear it.

But at least you don’t, like, own Backstreet Boys videos or … sorry, scuse me, phone.

No back street boys video! Really? Well actually, one Christmas season I was at Burger King and they were selling them for a $1.00 (that’s right a whole dollar, which tells you something right there) so I bought it and wrapped it up for a gag gift for Jamelah that Christmas. The look on her face when she opened it, priceless.

She never watched it until one night a friend came over and they DID. They laughed so hard they practically fell off the couch and rolled in the floor in hysterics. Honestly, it was one of the best video investments I ever made. Although I think it has only been viewed one time after that. Jamelah played it to see if it was as bad as she remembered it being. It was and the “playing” only lasted a couple minutes.

    9. Just Be Simple, Jason Molina (as Songs: Ohia)
    10. Glass, Concrete and Stone, David Byrne (of Talking Heads)

OK, seriously? Looking at my most-played list just now made me ashamedly resolve to lay off the “classical” and “movie scores” playlists for a while.

In my defense, I do most of my listening while working and it’s easier to concentrate to music without words. And classical music is a very worthwhile thing to love, and as for movie scores–an obsession is an obsession. And also? Why do I feel like I have to frantically explain myself for having the music tastes of an 80-year-old retired teacher?

If you need me, I’ll just be over here feeling like a loser.

I’ll post my embarrassing list later, but dude - My Happiness! Powderfinger! I miss that song! I need that song! It reminds me of my youth and everything awkward and wonderful.

Let the embarrassment commence - I must say I stuck some songs on repeat and the volume was down, I swear.
    This Womans Work, Kate Bush
    Promiscuous, Nelly Furtado
    Extraordinary, Liz Phair
    Meditation, Keith Jarrett
    Breathe, Michelle Branch
Walking With A Ghost, Tegan and Sara
The Man With The Child In His Eyes, Kate Bush
A Matter Of Trust, Billy Joel
    Joga, Björk
    Night After Sidewalk, Kaki King
    Secret Time, Rah
I Just don’t think I’ll Get Over You, Colin Hay
    Time After Time, Cyndi Lauper
Pulled Along By Love, Mutton Birds
    Pretty in Pink, Psychadelic Furs
Running Up That Hill, Kate Bush
We Don’t Need Another Hero, Tina Turner
    City Of Blinding Lights, U2
I’ll Be Your Lover, Too, Van Morrison
    Small Town, John Mellencamp
    Let Me Love You, Mario
    Kissing The Lipless, The Shins
Just What I Needed, The Cars
    I Feel Possessed, Crowded House
The Space Between, Dave Mathews Band
One of the top 25 was by me so there you go. I notice Powderfinger and Magic Dirt (who I saw live last time they were in my hometown) on your list Jam - You have as many Australian bands in your top 25 as me and I live here - So I thought I’d give you the next top 5 Australian band songs on my itunes too.
What You Want John Butler Trio
    Without You, Silverchair
    Flame Trees, Cold Chisel
    I’m Stained, The Superjesus
    Pace It, Magic Dirt
The playlist isn’t a true representation cos the songs I often make a point of listening to, I monitor, and just skip the outro thus not letting the play count tick over. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
P.S. Wifey’s list (most unshameful ever imo)is totally what most of my friends would consider “right on”, as for me, from my list, you can guess I fall towards the Britney side of the “Toxic” to Tom Waits spectrum.

Julia — Hi! Bette Midler. That’s kind of awesome, actually.

Linus — I have no idea what you’re talking about.

Anniefay — Heh. I was denying the existence of said video, but you outed me. It really is the most horrible thing ever recorded, which means I am keeping it forever.

Wifey — Dude, wife, that is the most non-embarrassing list ever.

Lesley — I go through phases with instrumental music, though for the most part I have a hard time with wordless music because I am a rube. And Britney lyrics are so deep.

    tiff — Powderfinger! Yay!

Rah — Dude, John Butler Trio! I think the song “Pickapart” has got to be pretty high up on my list of repeats. I used to get sent Australian stuff all the time by a friend who lived in Perth. Weirdest one ever would have to be The Sleepy Jackson. The dude on the front cover looks like a child molester.

you’re right. i have good taste in music. men? no. career choices? no. general life decisions? no. but music? i’m golden.

  10. wifeyon 21 Jun 2007 at 8:50 am

ps. rah, we don’t need another hero: greatest song ever! i am in love (still) with that music video.

  11. srahon 24 Jun 2007 at 3:41 pm

    1. America - Simon & Garfunkel
    2. Man, It’s So Loud in Here - They Might Be Giants
    3. Sens - Matheiu Boogaerts
    4. Forever in Blue Jeans - Neil Diamond
    5. Don’t Stop Believin’ - Journey
    6. Believe - K’s Choice
    7. For the Longest Time - Billy Joel
    8. Let the Sunshine In - The Fifth Dimension
    9. Kathy’s Song - Simon & Garfunkel
    10. If I Fell - The Beatles
    11. You Were Always On My Mind - Elvis Presley
    12. My Sweet Lord - George Harrison
    13. Guess That’s Why They Call It the Blues - Elton John
    14. Don’t Know Why - Norah Jones
    15. Yours, Yours, Yours - 1776
    16. Time for Livin’ - The Association
    17. Good Day Sunshine - The Beatles
    18. The 13th - The Cure
    19. À poings fermés - Benabar
    20. A Summer Song - Chad & Jeremy
    21. Laid - James
    22. Tempted - Squeeze
    23. Sensualité - Axelle Red
    24. Good Vibrations - The Beach Boys
    25. Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes - Edison Lighthouse

I’m not particularly embarrassed by any of these, but I am surprised. I wouldn’t have guessed I’d have any Elvis songs so highly ranked and there are several songs that I haven’t listened to in years but apparently I listened to them frequently enough once upon a time that they haven’t been surpassed yet.
