hi, i’m not dead

Published by jamelah at 8:42 pm under Everything, Dirty Pop, Internet-ish

Only mostly dead. And as you know, that means I’m slightly alive.

I had the flu, I think. I’m still getting over it and I feel weird… you know when you’re in a swimming pool just kind of floating and you can see and hear things but everything seems like it’s happening on a different planet? It’s kind of like that. Which is better than what was happening previously: high fever and a complete inability to stay awake. So that was a lot of fun.

Anyway, because I’m usually the last person in the world to get into things, I finally decided I would sign into my Last.fm account and download the plugin dealie and give that a whirl. So far, I’ve figured out two things about my listening habits.

1. I listen to Ryan Adams a lot.

ryan adams

And then I throw in a little Bonnie Tyler for good measure.

2. Sometimes I like to listen to songs that have nothing in common, other than the fact that they all start with the same letter.

B

Seriously, I’ll open my iTunes library, scroll to a certain letter, and listen my way through. I hear songs I never listen to otherwise that way (Kenny Wayne Shepherd? I didn’t know I owned that song), so it’s good, unless they are songs that suck, which happens sometimes. I have a lot of songs that start with the letter B. I have been on the letter B for most of the day. (I am currently on my last B song and very soon will embark on the new and exciting world of the letter C.)

Anyway, if you’re on Last.fm, we can be friends there. You know, because I’m not on enough social networking sites already.

Uh, the end. Aren’t you glad I crawled back from the brink of death* for that?

*You know, sorta.

i am systematically going through all the thousands of files on my computer, because according to winamp i haven’t listened to about one third of them. that is insane.
i do the song-by-letter thing, too, as part of that systematic approach. for one thing, i find out this way that i have several covers of one song. or that Ray LaMontagne and The White Stripes have two very different opinions of “Jolene.”
and i enjoy last.fm hugely. what’s your username?
anyway, good to hear you’re feeling better. i think the whole freaking continent came down with the flu these last few weeks.

Are we last.fm friends already? I can’t keep track of all these sites.

fathima — Hi. My last.fm username is jamelah. (I figure with a name like Jamelah, I don’t have to be username-creative, so that’s pretty much my username everywhere, unless some other Jamelah gets to it first, which always irritates me). I usually do the by-letter approach when I can’t decide what I want to listen to, because there has to be something in each letter that I like. I go through phases where I think I hate all my music.

srah — Nope, I just made the account and then never ever did anything with it, but this one seems like something I will actually use. Sometimes I think I am on too many sites.

You have inspired me to listen to musics in alphabetical order. It is quite an experience! I’m jumping around the alphabet whenever I start, but you get some interesting mixes!

because i am nothing short of genius i discovered another way of systematically randomising your playlist: by song length.
this has the added benefit of making it easy to get through more songs in less time, if you sort in ascending order. as i have some 1100 songs unheard on my computer according to winamp (which is probably lying), and as this weighs heavy on my soul for some reason, doing this makes me feel incredibly productive.
i should probably go do ‘real’ ‘work’ ‘now.’

i’m so glad that other people listen alphabetically! I love doing that. There are a lot of songs that start with “I”.

Also, that Bonnie Tyler song ROCKS.

    (feat. Ryan Adams)
-I found this amusing for some reason.

Hi, I followed your link from Srah’s blog. I’m shamelessly addicted to last.fm. I don’t listen in alphabetical order, but I’ll type in a short word like “dog” or “bra” (believe me, that’s funnier than it seems) and see what comes up. Makes for some fun playlists.

(You’re a “high” match with me, so obviously you have amazing taste.)
