yes, the weather

It’s cold in here.

It’s been a weird year, weather-wise, what with the warm winter, the sweltering summer, and then the cold fall. This morning my car was iced over, but letting it run a few minutes before I left for work mostly did the trick, except for the rear driver’s side window, which stayed covered in ice. I was driving to work, thinking that it would eventually thaw out, but it stubbornly remained frozen. Since having that entire window iced over meant that I had a pretty ridiculously large blind spot, and driving with the wacky morning commute crowd with a ridiculously large blind spot isn’t a particularly good idea, I pulled over at a rest area, thinking that I would take a minute to scrape the ice off my window and then hit the road again. But as luck would have it, I couldn’t find my ice scraper. It’s probably in my trunk, but I didn’t feel like taking the time to look for it, so instead I wiped away the ice with my hand. Which was smart and not cold at all.

It worked though, which is, I guess, the important part.

This morning at work, I chatted with a friend about how cold it is (seriously! so cold!) and she said that she spends the winter looking for islands she can buy when she wins the lottery, so that when the world is frozen over and miserable, she can imagine herself there. Good idea, that, and I guess I sort of do the same thing, except instead of looking for an island to buy, I plan fantasy vacations. Sometimes when I have a few spare minutes, I look up warm places and plan trips there, except without actually planning trips there, since actual trips cost money and… sigh.

This year, I think I’m going to spend the month of February in Thailand. I don’t know what it’s like in Thailand in February, but I bet I wouldn’t have to spend any time thawing out any car windows with my bare hands.
