For my birthday gift this year, my husband took me to Mackinac* Island. I had never been before, despite having lived in Michigan for most of my life, and thought why not? I wasn’t sure what to expect, other than a tourist trap that sells fudge and t-shirts, and it’s true, it is a tourist trap that sells fudge and t-shirts (and yes, I acquired both fudge AND a t-shirt), but also the no-cars thing is pretty nice. (If unfamiliar, Mackinac Island doesn’t allow cars, and travel around the island is either on foot, bike, horseback, or in a horse-drawn carriage.)
We went after my birthday, on the last day of summer, and took our bikes over on the ferry. After getting up in the morning and having breakfast, we rode the 10-ish-mile perimeter of the island. It’s a well-maintained, paved road, and it wasn’t very busy, probably helped by the fact that we were there after Labor Day.
I’m glad I went, and had a really lovely time; not sure if I was into it enough to go back again instead of traveling to a new spot next time. But a week and a half later, I have to say that riding my bike along the shore of Lake Huron with the wind in my face is insanely great and who am I kidding? Five stars. Would do again.
